What’s in a Name?

Have you had the experience at church before when someone approaches you during the greeting time and, with a big smile on their face, says, “Hi! It is so good to see you again!”
And you can’t remember their name.
You recognize them. You know you’ve said “hi” to them (perhaps on numerous occasions). Maybe you sat at their table during the monthly breakfast. Or perhaps you attend the same Bible Study. Yet you cannot, for the life of you, remember this person’s name. You can probably stammer through this interaction without the person noticing. But how much better would it feel to be able to respond with their name.
That is why I am so excited to introduce our new directory! A pictorial directory lists the individuals and families of our church. We include a picture as well as phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Several months ago we sent out an updated directory and we realized that our system malfunctioned and left off quite a few families (oops!). We have since fixed the problem and reworked how we compile the directory.
Here is what you can expect moving forward:
1. We will e-mail you an updated directory (with new members included) three times a year- fall, winter, and spring. When you receive this e-mail, simply download the new directory and delete your old directory.
2. If you see that your picture is outdated, please e-mail janeen@unitypres.org a new picture. She will include it in the next directory update. This is true for updated addresses and phone numbers too!
3. Perhaps you prefer a paper copy instead of an electronic copy of the directory. Stop by the office and we’ll be happy to print one out for you.
There is power in knowing someone’s name. That is how we become a church family. Perhaps this week I can challenge you to learn one new name at church. Good luck!
“But now says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
-Isaiah 43:1
See you on Sunday!
