Central Guatemala Mission Trips and Support
Casa Angelina Orphanage
For the past several years, Unity has sent a mission team to work at the Casa Angelina Orphanage in Tuluche. This orphanage is sponsored by What Matters Ministry based in the U.S.A. The Unity team performs jobs that include painting, electrical, and plumbing work on new buildings; pouring concrete; digging trenches; and general maintenance work. We also spend time getting to know the children and reaching out through games and play. Along with the work, Unity also provides much needed clothing, shoes, toys, medical, and office supplies. This has been a rewarding experience for everyone who has participated and we look forward to returning each year.
Unity also supports an upper-grade scholarship program in El Sitan. Unity Presbyterian and several of its members cover the tuition, books and uniform costs of students in upper grades so they can continue their education. Free public education is not available in most parts of Guatemala. Unity has also contributed to the start-up and incubation costs of a social enterprise for the women of El Sitan. This co-op, which now makes products available under the Wakami name has provided additional income for families in El Sitan.
Grace for Guatemala (Ecocina Stove Project)
In many developing parts of the world, the most dangerous activity a woman can undertake is cooking for her family. Four million burns are reported annually and smoke is the leading cause of death in children under five. Daily cooking is the equivalent to mothers and children of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day. Most villagers use open flame fires in a corner of their dirt-floored homes to cook. The collection of the daily required wood per family results in deforestation.
Since 2013 Grace for Guatemala has purchased and delivered 450 Ecocina stoves to homes of widows, widowers, and families in El Sitan, Tululché, Zaragoza, and neighboring villages. The cost of the $80 stoves have been sponsored by friends, neighbors, and churches. Unity Presbyterian plays a big role by sponsoring stoves, sending members to deliver stoves, and covering delivery costs.
Local and USA Mission Trips
The Mission Team has led several trips to the Cherokee Indian Reservation in western North Carolina since 2010. Three hours away from Unity, this trip provides an opportunity for families and individuals to be introduced to the mission trip experience. Projects often include home construction projects, visits to a local nursing home, and trips to local children’s summer programs for games and fellowship. This is a great way for families to be involved together in mission, experience different cultures, and share the love of God through work and fellowship. Unity has made a strong connection with the Cherokee people, touching all those involved.
Opportunities for individuals to travel on trips to Nigeria, Kenya, Belize, Trinidad, and Guatemala on a one-on-one basis exist with several organizations, including the Kilgoris Project, Access to Success, Habit Missions, and trips sponsored through the Western NC Presbytery. Call the church office or speak with a member of the mission team to find out more.
